Summer Space Grants 2009/10
30-hours of space for creative development and research
Dancehouse is pleased to announce the successful applicants for the 2009 /2010 Summer Space Grants.
Kristy Ayre, Deanne Butterworth, Rob McCredie and EGG/Sarah Cooper.
The Summer Space Grants run from December 1 to February 28 during which time these four artists or groups will be engaged in developing their ideas and practice at Dancehouse. The four projects are very different in nature and we are pleased to tell you about the artists and have them share a few words about what they are seeking to achieve and how they will be working.
Kristy Ayre
Working Title - Cryptid (A Cryptid is a creature that has reportedly been seen but never scientifically proven to exist)
'My movement ideas currently include an investigation of non-descript creatures, movement that is unfamiliar, far from pedestrian, fantastical and has characteristics that can't be defined as either human or animal. I want to experiment with movement and self generated sound using different musical instruments perhaps even hybrid instruments and also; movement that is restricted to specific parts of the body perhaps with self made inhibitions. I want this work to be performed in a light box cube that can be viewed from any side. As previously in 'rabbeat', I am interested in silhouette imagery but this time, I also wish to include a 3D perspective adding two (but possibly several) distinct ways of moving throughout the work"
Since 2002 Kristy Ayre has performed regularly with Melbourne based dance company Chunky Move. As well as working with Gideon Obarzanek (Chunky Move) Kristy has performed in works for Lucy Guerin Inc, Prue Lang, Kim Itoh (Japan), Shelley Lasica and Luke George's LIFE-SIZE.
Throughout 2009 Kristy has continued to perform nationally and internationally with Chunky Move, was a participating artist in the inaugural Splendid Arts Lab in Lismore, NSW and is choreographic consultant and senior performer for Dario Varcirca's Fringe Festival show, Take Off Your Skin.
Kristy choreographed and performed her first solo work 'rabbeat' as part of Lucy Guerin Inc's 2008, Pieces for Small Spaces and was also choreographic assistant on Eddie Perfect's Shane Warne the Musical. She teaches workshops and master classes on a regular basis both within Melbourne and around the world.
Deanne Butterworth
"One and the Same' is a new performance project planned to be performed in early 2010. It is a solo dance work involving sound, dance and filmed visual imagery created autonomously by two artists, Deanne Butterworth and Michael Munson. These two artists have worked together on two other performance projects, 'Dual Reperage' (With the Lot at Lucy Guerin Inc, April 2009) and 'Dual Reperage in Threes' (Open Season at Dancehouse, September 2009) and for the work in progress showing of 'How to Act' (First Run showing at Lucy Guerin, September 2009).
"'One and the Same' will be a work interested in the starting point of something. A starting point can potentially become blurry when numerous projects occur consecutively and ideas from one project continue into the next. Relating to other experience and history, to repeat a process is seductive and alluring especially when the results might be fruitful. In the interests of creating a 'newness' each artist will ultimately be responsible for their specialist art form. However, the responsibilities allocated for sound, movement and image are not finite as the project will operate as a cell designed for the possibility to cross between these three mediums. I.e., each artist will use the concepts and experience of their specialist art form to analyze the 'lesser known' form. The fundamental area of interest within the project is concerned with defining the moment when something new occurs."
Deanne Butterworth has been working in contemporary dance over a fifteen-year period creating a number of works made collaboratively and solo works which have been supported by Arts Victoria, the Australia Council & Dancehouse. A graduate of the Western Australian Academy for Performing Arts (1993) she was nominated for a Green Room Award for emerging dancer, (1998). She teaches at Chunky Move, and has taught at Deakin University, Melbourne University Union Arts & Footscray Community Arts Centre.
Michael Munson has been performing, writing and studying music for 25 years. He has an Honours degree in composition which focussed on digital and analogue electronics. Michael has studied classical guitar, tutored in composition, and studied at the University of California San Diego. He works as a freelance composer/sound designer, collaborating regularly with visual artists on installations at Melbourne art galleries, and constructing sound for film and plays.
Rob McCredie
"Throughout 2009 I have been developing my solo practice in the studio, in connection to developing material for a group work I am making for the Next Wave Festival 2010 I want to keep exploring my own performative body, and developing solo material for myself, with the view to making a solo work in the near future.
I have been exploring my interest in Deborah Hay's work for a while as part of this process, both as a huge influence on my performance practice, and as a framework for how I approach making material. I am interested in layering choreographed movement with choreographic instructions to create material that is solid yet flexible in performance.
I am also particularly inspired by the solo work The Part, by Antonjia Livingstone, that I saw recently at Impulstanz in Vienna, and her personality, and her work, which was incredibly bold, character driven, rich with textures and utterly surprising."
Rob McCredie graduated from the VCA in 2006 and he is a 2009 KICKSTART recipient and 2008 SiPart sponsorship winner.
He has been performing professionally for the past three years and in 2009 Rob performed in: Reverb by Martin Del Amo and Brooke Stamp, for Melbourne Fringe Festival, Take off your Skin as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival Keynote Project, Negotiation by Rob McCredie and Melissa Jones, performed in FIVE at Northcote Town Hall and Here We Go by Rob McCredie, which was performed in Finucane and Smith's Salon De Dance at La Mama
EGG - Sarah Cooper
A collaborative ensemble of choreographers, dancers and audio visual artists presented 'EGG' as part of the 2009 Melbourne Fringe Festival. 'EGG' is a contemporary dance and audio visual exploration questioning the relevance of time and sequence within a dance work, and in our everyday life. By breaking down the conventional constraints of Beginning, Middle and End, 'EGG' presents a complex and inconclusive debate through abstract movement and deconstructive approach.
With Adam Wheeler as our mentor through the Melbourne Fringe Festival Outside Eye Program, we discovered the gravity of our concept and hope to further pursue it and take it to the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Conceptually we need to further explore and investigate the elements that are Beginning, Middle and End, and we would use the space and artistic support to further develop our movement and approach to the presentation of our findings.
Collaborating artists:
Hayden Annable, Faith Bolton, Sarah Cooper, Sally Kuhle, Melanie Trojkovic.
Summer Space Grants take place at Dancehouse between 1 December 2009 and 28 February 2010.
A Summer space Grant is up to 30 hours free studio time and is for creative development and research.
Successful applicants consult with Dancehouse staff at the beginning of their creative development periods. Recipients are asked to present the results of their research, either as performed excerpts and/or discussion. A short written report is also required to acquit the grant. As an aid to monitoring how Dancehouse is accessed we ask that all successful applicants provide an account of attendance numbers at any showings they may present as part of their Space Grant.
