Tertiary Dance Weekend: LINK (WAAPA)
14 November 2014 - 15 November 2014
Performing as part of Tertiary Dance Weekend at Dancehouse, LINK present SURGE, a triple bill of new dance works. Emerging choreographers Liesel Zink (Brisbane) and Matt Cornell (Darwin) will join established Australian dance maker and LINK Artistic Director, Michael Whaites to create an exciting and varied program of works on the talented dancers of the LINK company.
The Miranda Warning
LINK Dance Company, WAAPA's pre-professional dance company - the only one of its kind in Australia - was created to give dancers the opportunity to make a smooth transition from student to professional life and is structured exactly like a professional company with 2 seasons annually as well as an Australian and European tour, from which they have just returned.
New works are created for the company by highly regarded local and interstate choreographers giving young dancers the skills to make valuable contributions to choreographic processes and become seasoned and compelling performers.
Liesel Zink is a Brisbane based dance artist who is heavily influenced by psychology and sociology research. As a choreographer, she has created works for Expressions Dance Company, Tasdance and Artslink.
The work Liesel is creating with LINK is informed by the limitations of protest as a form activism in Australia's contemporary society and poses the question, "how can I use my practice to find new and innovative forms of social political activism?"
"It has been fascinating to bring these questions to the LINK rehearsal room and work with these eight intelligent young women who are not only trying to find their individual political voice, but also how they can use creativity to impact the world they live in. We have been exploring the challenges associated with this; concepts of freedom of speech, collective action, mass vulnerability and above all the importance of human connection."
Darwin based, Matt Cornell's methodology is rooted in play and curiosity to facilitate immersion. To this end, Matt has adventured through Australia, Europe & Asia as a dancer, choreographer or composer across contemporary dance, theatre, installation, film, rock concerts, video clips, and street art with groups including DanceNorth (Gavin Webber), Davis Freeman, Lisa Wilson, Shaun Parker Company, Strings Attached, Angela Goh, Nick Power, Legs On The Wall, Tiffany-&-the-Curls and Style Impressions Krew.
Matt was the 2011 Arts NT Young Achiever of the Year, a danceWEB scholar, a speaker at TEDx Darwin, a NFSA HipHop artist-in-residence, a Legs On The Wall artist-in-residence for 'OpenSource' & an invited participant at the Ultima Vez Research Lab. Matt has recently worked with acclaimed Australian video artist Shaun Gladwell as a dancer in his work 'Dead Flag Blues'. Currently Matt is developing new work in Outback Northern Australia supported by OzCo and Darwin Festival.
LINK Artistic Director, Michael Whaites, rounds out the program with LIFE CYCLE. An unknown figure rides a bike to power the lights and sound. A dancer auctions the value of insignificant objects. Movement loops. Running accumulates running and endurance provides time that passes. We get older. Whaites says of his new work, " It explores a dystopian world, the passing of time and questions how we value and place importance on things above our lives."
