You! Clown?

You! Clown? Wanna be stupid onstage, without being a dunce?

Spend two weeks in the idiot world of clown & physical comedy with Clare Bartholomew & Derek Ives. With a focus on group work in improvisation, games exercises and also solo and duet exploration, performers will each find their own 'clown' relationships and characters and discover different techniques that work for them. Emphasis will be on the playfulness and complicite between performers onstage and their joy at being 'seen' by the audience. During the two weeks there will also be time spent mentoring and directing known or newly created, solos, duets and/or small group pieces.

Clare Bartholomew is a member of physical comedy ensemble The Business who created The Business...as usual, The Concert, Big Business, One Man's Business(Comedy Festival Foreign Exchange Award, Best Comedy - Melbourne Fringe, The British Council Oz Export Award). She has worked as a Clown Doctor for 12 years and is also a trainer for The Humour Foundation nationally. She has taught clown masterclasses and performance independently and for organisations such as Tasmanian Circus Festival, The Women's Circus, Victoria University, Slipstream and Westside Circus, POW, Circus Oz and more. She produces the sensational cabaret/comedy act Die Roten Punkte - Best Production - Montreal Fringe, Greenroom Award - Best Production (Cabaret), Best Comedy - Victoria Fringe '08 & '10.

DEREK IVES was a founding member of ROCK N ROLL CIRCUS (CIRCA), worked with CLUB SWING, CIRCUS OZ, CIRC CIRKOR, CIRCUS MONOXIDE, often as both rigger and performer. He has trained with Phillipe Gaulier and Angela DE Castro in clown and buffon. He started THE CANDY BUTCHERS and ON WILD DUCK, the absurd comedy and clown duo. His twin obsessions, clown and circus collide in his solo show, BUCKET of LOVE. He also directs Ireland's TUMBLE CIRCUS, most recently in France at La Fountinaue, the Centre for the Development of Street Performance in Brest. He has also spent much of the last two years as associate director at Circus Oz creating Steam Powered with Mike Finch. Derek's particular interest is in the sometimes slim line between buffon and clown.
