2014 Summer Intensive

The 2014 Summer Intensive features technique classes from Monday – Friday taught by local performers, makers and teachers.

Mon 10 Feb - Fiona Cameron - Over the last twenty years Fiona has established herself as a passionate teacher and dance artist. She has taught master classes in Europe, Asia and the US as well as at most Australian Tertiary institutions. She has regularly taught for Chunky Move, Bangarra and Sydney Dance Company.

Tues 11 Feb - Caroline Meaden - Caroline is a dance artist who has performed in works by Anton, Fiona Malone, Malia Johnston, Anna Smith, Rochelle Carmichael, Feng Feng Wang, Rob McCredie and Nat Cursio Co. Last year she completed a postgraduate diploma in choreography, creating and performing two solo pieces. She regularly collaborates with Alice Dixon on screen and performance work and has performed for Opera Australia in works by Graeme Murphy, Vivienne Newport and Kate Champion. Caroline was a co-recipient of a City of Melbourne Young Artist grant and recently undertook a choreographic residency at Mosaico Danza in Torino, Italy with Alice Dixon.

Wed 12 Feb - Paea Leach - Paea has worked as a dancer and teacher and maker of work in Australia, Germany and Belgium. She has practiced dancing and writing with Perth maker Jo Pollitt over the last 5 years ( in between working with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (BRXX) and others. Her interest has developed from intensively rigorous floor work ('European style') to Contact Improvisation to an interest in form and mechanics, anatomy and somatic enquiry. After many an injury, much global travel and touring, she is interested to LAND and teach and share her knowledge that draws from a rich bed of the world and how it is moving. Her primary intention: to move and be moved, and to ask what drives us...really.

Thur 13 Feb - James Welsby - James is a performer, choreographer, and teacher based in Melbourne. He graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2007 and since 2008 James has been co-director of dance ensemble Phantom Limbs (winner BEST DANCE Melbourne Fringe 2013) and has performed with many dance companies and independent makers (Luke George, Finucane and Smith, Martin Del Amo, Nat Cursio, Hydra Poesis, Buzz Dance Theatre, Opera Australia and more). His independent work has been presented across Australia, and can be seen this year in Next Wave Festival. James' video works have been screened internationally through ReelDance International Dance on Screen Festival and The Singapore Film Festival.  He has taught extensively since 2010 at Chunky Move, Buzz Dance Theatre, Dancehouse, Ausdance and The R.A.D. 

Fri 14 Feb - Chimene Steele-Prior - Chimene is a Melbourne based Performer, Choreographer and Teacher. She studied at the New Zealand School of Dance and at WAAPA as a member of LINK Dance Company. In 2013, Chimene was the Inaugural Choreographic Secondment Recipient at Chunky Move. She has been the recipient of a Melbourne City Council Young Artist Grant and has received choreographic residencies through Dancehouse, Dirty Feet, Liquid Skin Studio and Window 99. Chimene has worked with Luke George, Sheridan Lang, Shaun McLeod, Tim Harvey, Bec Reid, Shian Law, Amy MacPherson, Melissa Jones and Brian Lucas. She has also performed with Opera Australia in productions of Turandot, The Ring Cycle and Macbeth.

Mon 17 Feb - Dianne Reid - Dianne is a well-respected and sought after teacher who has been based in Melbourne for the past 22 years. She creates work and teaches across multiple disciplines (dance, media/video, theatre) regularly lecturing at major tertiary dance programs (Deakin University) & providing training for contemporary dance companies (Australian Dance Theatre). Dianne draws from an eclectic range of music that can challenge and stimulate renewed attention to personal performance presence and new stylistic interpretations.

Tues 18 Feb - Shelley Lasica - Over the past 25 years, Shelley has choreographed, directed and performed dance works. She has shown work throughout Australia and in cities including London, Manchester, Paris, Vienna and New York.  Shelley has a rigorous commitment to the choreographic development of her work, hence the various contexts in which works are shown and the various ways in which spaces are occupied.

Wed 19 Feb - Fiona Bryant - Fiona is a Melbourne based choreographer, performer and movement educator. Her work is chiefly concerned with discovering and re-discovering ways in which to engage the whole psychophysical self in the processes of generating and performing dance. Fiona moves between making solo and duet works, and presents works in a range of environments covering a breadth of thematic concerns. She is a regular teacher at the School for F.M Alexander Studies and draws upon principles of the Alexander Technique in her teaching, choreographic and performance work. This year Fiona will commence her practice-led PhD research, Choreographing the Choreographed at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Thur 20 Feb - Gregory Lorenzutti - Born in Brazil, Gregory is a dance maker and photographer now based in Melbourne. He is interested in the relationship between movement, photography and cultural identity. Gregory has worked with several Brazilian and international artists and dance companies, suchas Renato Vieira, Nos da Danca, Dani Lima and Niteroi City Ballet. Currently, Gregory is the international curator for the First Contemporary Dance Conference in Niteroi - Brazil in 2014.

Fri 21 Feb - Prue Lang - After graduating from the VCA in Melbourne, Lang joined Meryl Tankard's Australian Dance Theatre. In 1996 she moved to France working for the Choreographic National Centre in Angers, Compagnie Cre-Ange in Paris as well as her own independent projects. In 1999 she began an important collaboration with William Forsythe as a leading soloist and choreographer of the Frankfurt Ballett. Since 2005 she has been working as an independent choreographer presenting her work in international festivals, theatres and museums throughout the world. She has been voted Most Outstanding dancer, Most Innovative Production and Most Outstanding Choreographer by Europe's Balletanz's Annual Critics' Survey.
