Master-class with Foofwa d'Imobilité

Acclaimed Swiss contemporary choreographer and former Cunningham and Stuttgart Ballet dancer Foofwa d'Imobilité gives master classes that emphasize both technique and creativity. As a veteran of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (1991-1998), with physicality that embodies the Cunningham aesthetic, Foofwa d'Imobilité is a unique dancer. As the founder of his own association, Neopost Ahrrrt, with a commitment to production, pedagogy, and play, d'Imobilité understands that technique is meant to serve the dancer who in turn serves the choreography. Students are meant to expand while nurturing their foundation, which is their technique.

And Foofwa's classes are truly fun!

Foofwa d'Imobilité's classes and workshops are a mix between Foofwa's interest at the moment and the individual needs of the students. Rather inclusive, the sessions do not to make a difference between professionals and amateurs but try to be a personal exchange with anyone  curious enough to come.  The teachings explore two directions: on one hand, to develop form, history, knowledge and structure of dance - in one word the choreographic laws and tools; on the other hand, to encourage creativity, expression of one's singularity, liberation from norms, codes and conventions - in one word the art of freedom. The ultimate goal is: empowerment and liveliness.

Foofwa on pedagogy:

I like thinking of pedagogy as much practice as theory, as much clear technique as creative improvisation, as much use of old practices as daily experiments. I also attempt to find a link between my latest interests in choreography and the possible use of these ideas by each participant in the workshops/classes.

Originally trained at the Ecole de Danse de Genève, d'Imobilité danced professionally with the Stuttgart Ballet in Germany prior to joining the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Foofwa d'Imobilité crosses international, artistic, and pedagogic borders. Merce Cunningham called him a "risk-taker." (Those familiar with d'Imobilité's Cunningham years know him by his given name Frédérick Gafner.) He has been choreographing his own work since 1998 and has won grants and awards, including a 1998 New York Bessie and a 2006 Swiss Prize for Dance and Choreography. Foofwa has performed as a dancer around the world, notably at the Paris Opera, the Fenice Theater in Venice, Italy, and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. His work has been presented by The Kitchen, Chez Bushwick and the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York, the Maison de la Danse and the Biennale de la danse in Lyon, France, and over 40 other cities in Europe.
