EXERCISES IN CRITICALITY - PART #1

04 November 2017

With theoretical and process-based exercises, we will explore the differences between finding fault (criticism), to developing new critical perspectives (critique), to enfolding elements of distance and perspective within that which exists or is yet to come (criticality). This open discussion platform will experiment with ways in which our daily practices can be opened up to new modes of thought and performative enactment. These investigations aim to rejig notions of knowledge, experience, artistic practice and audience engagement.

CROSSING THE FLOOR & OTHER SCORES

Choreographer Jonathan Burrows and composer Matteo Fargion share a five day workshop, introducing some of the ideas behind their performances at Danehouse Melbourne. The workshop is open to anyone interested in the performing arts, regardless of technical ability, and will focus on particular questions of time, form and composition which underpin their work, as well as the strategies they use to disrupt what they do and connect with audience. The workshop will include task based exercises as well as discussion and reflection.

ENGAGING THE TALA RHYTHM - PRIYA SRINIVASAN

This workshop explores the ways that rhythms animate our body-mind-spirit being. Participants will use the breath as the first rhythm that our bodies create to then attend to the external rhythms in our environment including the rhythms of land and then tapping into Indian rhythmical tala structures as a framework to reimagine our bodies from another time/space.

INTRODUCTION TO MACHO DANCE - EISA JOCSON

This workshop is an introduction to the basic techniques of macho dancing. These techniques have been distilled and codified through the research and touring of Macho Dancer showing at Arts Centre Melbourne as a part of Asia TOPA. The physical principles of macho dancing will be explored beginning with the illusion of weight and volume as well as viscosity in time and space.

CIRCLE WITH MILLION EXITS - PICHET KLUNCHUN

04 March 2017

In this workshop, Pichet will introduce the new dance techniques developed from the traditional Thai dance that leads to the contemporary movements called 'Circle with million exits.' Participants will learn to separate 'body, mindset, and sense of feeling' from each other in order to see the 'traditional techniques' and deconstruct the traditional form bridging them to the 'contemporary way.'
